#booksforchange

While I wrote this, I googled to have found out a Swiss-supported organization working in Nepal and India with a similar name to the title of this blog. I have nothing to do with that organization but would love to know more about them. But earlier this evening on a scooter ride home, the very three words "books for change" rang in my mind out of a little conversation I had with my friends during book shopping.

Samip picks up "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" from one of the aisles inside Nepal Mandala Book Shop at Lakeside and comes next to me.

Me - ' I want this too.'

Samip - 'You can get one.'

Me - 'That would be stupid of us to buy the same book.'

Dilip - ' Right, it's not a textbook.'

All of us smiled. And definitely, Samip picked the same book and I picked a different one.

Checking out at the counter:

Me - 'I bet, I can read this book in a week. Can you do that?'

Samip - 'Yes, I can. But if you can't, you will have to buy me a new one.'

Me - 'Same applies to you.'

We never discussed on the third alternative ie. neither of us would read the whole book in a week. It's too obvious that we will continue reading and exchange or buy new sets again.  Either way, we do have incentives to read new books if we stick to the soul of our conversation.

Books-for-change to me is an ambiguous concept and it's not a new concept for sure. I have books for exchange and I want books for a change. A lot of things I have learned in three decades of my life were missing in textbooks. A lot of things about life 101s are on the pages far beyond we can imagine. A - book - a - week has been a thing in a book reading culture, though it may seem ambitious. Reading habit is reported to be one of the most powerful habits of leaders/corporate leaders/billionaires around the globe. They all have been a lifelong learner and combined with reading habits to other virtues could have only brought about the achievements and changes they envisioned.

Having said that, learning through information access has gone through a paradigm shift due to the advent of the digital boom. But writings have always been the primary source of information relay throughout the human history and until tech engulfs everything, the paper books should still be around. As for now, I am also going with the trend and writing a digital blog for someone to read in this universe for eternity.

Clinging to the conventional wisdom-seeking-practice and longing for changes that we can bring about in several aspects of our life, family, and community, I pledge to be a lifelong learner.

Here is a list of books I have for exchange :

1. Thinking Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman
2. Money, Master the Money Game, Tony Robbins
3. Lenin, Robert Service
4. You are the World, J Krishnamurti

Take one, give one. Non-fictions preferably.

The book in the cover picture is my read for the week.

Into The Jungle - A Short Story

Once upon a time a guy loved a girl a lot. The guy was Manav and the girl was Romi. Manav was little off the girl’s status. Romi was well-off by every means. She would come to date Manav on her dad's luxury car,but Manav was totally not accustomed to the life she lived in.

On a date, in a car, Romi found every move of Manav a little bizzare. His expression to automatic doorlock, the use of GPS navigator, his demeanor of freqeuntly tapping foot on the floor mat and fidgeting the shirt collar was more than enough to read that he was feeling awkward. On the otherhand Manav thought- “ I must be a puppet to her. Why would she even let me in her life ?”

On the next date, she came on a public cab. On the backseat of the cab, Manav and Romi sat like strangers. Finally, Manav held the hand of Romi but she didn’t took notice of that as she was busy looking outside. Then Manav strengthened the hold of her hand.

Romi turned her head towards Manav. They shared their first kiss. It was such a desperate and passionate kiss that they even fogot where they were headed for. Driver intervened in the middle of their romance “ ah ah…” – cleard his throat “ So,where are we going?

Manav left the hold of his hand from Romi’s head and asked “ where are we going?” “I don’t know.”- answered Romi

Then Manav leaned to towards the driver and said –“ towards the National Highway 74.”

Manav asked the cab driver to stop the car at a point where

highway was running through the jungle.
“This is where I live.” - Manav said
"What?"- Romi startled “ You mean in this jungle”
“Yup” – Manav
“You must be kidding” -Romi .
“No, I am not.”- Manav
Romi stood in front of Manav with crossed hand on the chest and bewildered look on her face.
“ Come with me” Manav grabbed the hand of Romi and they walked side by side through the small road into the jungle. Romi was already sweating with anxiety.
" I thought he is a decent guy. Is it that he wants to have sex in the woods?" Romi thought. Romi frequently expired a forceful gasps of air while manav dragged her deep into the jungle.

"I made a terrible mistake by accepting to follow. I should not have given a clue to my heart by kissing him. What if I  don’t get turned on here in this lousy place. Is he going to rape me?"- Romi monologized.
Finally stopped and questioned "where are you taking me? "
“Towards  the wildest fun you can ever have.”- Manav answered with a witty look. "What , wildest fun “ Romi stammered with fear “ What is that ?”
" I’m sure you have never been through anything like the adventure you are witnessing in few minutes from now."- Manav cajoled Romi.

"Fuck you! dumbhead, you would not even imagine how freaked out I am right now."- Romi thought and continued walking.
Walking for a while, Romi shook her hand of the Manav’s and roared- " I don’t wanna go deep in the jungle.”
Manav-"But you have not even entered the fun yet"
Romi exclaimed-“what do you want?”
“What do I want???"- Manav shrugged his shoulders and replied with a puzzled face -" I  want nothing, I want you to be happy with me. I want peace."
"Peace by hurting someone, I guess"- Romi retorted.
Manav-" Am I hurting you? I guess not”
Romi - "Yes, you are. I have never been to a jungle. Besides your idea of jungle romance sounds so dumb to me.”
"What"- Manav leaned his head forward with a bulging eyes. And then he begged Romi to follow him to some distance ahead.
Romi thought-" Where is this dumbhead taking me?”

Far into the woods Romi saw a gate of flowers in a dome shape.
" Finally the rape scene is there. I’m sure he is taking me there." romi thought
Romi just closed her eyes and remembered god.
"Oh god! please guide me to the right thing" Romi prayed in every single steps to the gate.
As the gate appeared closer, she saw that they were approaching a dead end, into the verge of that jungle.
"Where are you taking me?" Romi started crying "Are you going to kill me?"
Manav hold the head of romi and said "No, baby you are getting inside entirely a new dimension of your life" Manav kissed her though Romi was rejecting.

Then Manav went for something on the gate and next they were sliding on their back through the dark narrow and slippery tunnel. Romi shouted at top of her lungs before she saw light again. As she opened her eyes, she saw things that she has never seen ever in her life. She was in a waterpool and a waterfall was over her head. The waterpool was surrounded by a garden of orchids and treehouse there next to the garden. Everything looked so colorful that she totally forgot where she was.

Without telling a word, she got out of pool and walked towards the garden and plucked a green flower. All of a sudden a group of squirrels surrounded her and started making noise. She was scared. Manav squeakd an inconspicious sound and squirrels went away.

"How did you do that? "- Romi asked Manav with an amazed look.

“What?”- Manav

“I mean you signalled something to those squirrels. Are you some kind of a magician? I can’t believe this is happening.

“I am wildlife biologist."- Manav declared in a soft tone.

“Seriously”- Romi commented as if she heard it wrong.”Well
all this time you pretended to me as an illiterate jerk and yet, i liked your innocense so much”
" I’m indeed an innocent guy." Manav said.

Romi ran towards Manav and threw her at him with her legs around Manav’s waist and hugged him. They kissed and started undressing eachother. Manav took her to the pool with her body still tucked to him.

With a low tone romi said in the ear of Manav-" I love you"

and Manav replied " Well I do love you, but would you stay with me here forever."

Romi-" Ok, but in one condition."

“What ?" – Manav

"You’ll have to make love to me in this pool, in the orchid garden, in the treehouse and all over this and as much as I want."

“So, let’s get started”- Manav
And they burst into laughter, while a flock of birds flied above their head

The Velvet Morning: Chapter Six - In A Turbulence of Humiliation

Prof. Dr. Harish Chandra, PhD in Economics, gushed out hot air onto his fist as he reclined on the sofa. A poignant look on his face epitomized his grief.

“ You people dishonored our college.”- Professor Harish spoke in a rusty voice and rolled down the sports section on the “ Kathmandu Post” daily to display an article entitled “ A Bloody Basketball Clash”

The troubled looking guys who were totally lost on the unfathomable miseries inhabited the sofa, on the opposite. Chetan, Sulav, Rakesh, Solace, Jagdish, Mahesh and Abhinav made a good basketball team but they were supposedly outside their arena confronting the interrogation of the Principal.

Abhinav could feel his palpitation right on the carotid beneath his jaw.  A sense of guilt was fueling up inside. He wanted that meeting to end as soon as possible.

“ I do not singlehandedly believe Abhinav as the culprit. There would be a thorough investigation on this. Basketball is the rich culture of this college. A winning spirit is essence of every games, every competitions or..or.. “ Dr. Haris stuttered “every tests of your life.”

“You see those trophies “- Dr. Harish pointed at the shelf with five sports shield behind his study desk- “ they hold different stories.” He inclined forward to grab the paper, then tore the paper to four pieces through the center plane and tossed on the table between him and the boys.

“You are the wriggling worms in a broth who flourish to defame the very place that nurtures you. Now I am afraid that this scandal can have a malign influence on the people around, in the college and outside.”

An utter silence in the meeting accentuated the heavy breath of the boys. The pompous speech from the principle was so unpalatable that they apparently swore under their heavy breath.

“Abhinav, so basketball seems to be a kid play. Right? You want to upgrade your game to a ring. Is Tyson your favorite?”  Dr. said facetiously. “ You were accused of felony for that act. I protected you. You could have been jailed for years for an attempted murder.”

Abhinav’s face was scarlet with shame. He was steaming internally by such an ignominy. Deep inside, he was apologetic for his deed. He wished everything that happened in last 24 hours was just a nightmare and everything would start over in a blink.

“ I am really sorrowful for everything that happened. I do love every student; equally I can’t stand anything that would smear a stature of this college. Now, go to your class! Take home a big lesson. Grow up!”

Kasthamandup Basketball Team left without a squeal of a sound.

×××

There was the knock at the door. Lecturer Binod stopped the topic in between to open the door. Office assistant stood there with a courteous face.

“Excuse me sir, Harish sir wants to see the Class Representative and the assistant for a while.”- Office assistant mumbled on the ear of Lecturer Binod.

“CR and the assistant CR”- He glance around the class “ to the Principal’s office.” Rashmi and Ases left behind the creak of the chairs and went out of the class.

Abhinav gave a prognostic glare at office assistant. As the door slammed back, he got a bit of a thumbnail between his incisors in a sheer anxiety. He could discern everything happening on the periphery of the basketball clash.

“Principal probably wants the clear picture of the showdown.” Abhinav soliloquized.

×××

In the lunch break, Abhinav and Binay sat in the canteen, and waited for their chow mein.

“ Principal probably wants to know your character in the class or may be he wants to know everything about yesterday’s incident. That is why he called CR. If you are lucky Rashmi will cover you ass. What actually happened this morning in the principal’s office?” Binay asked inquisitively.

“ I thought I would be under fire. But he did not particularly regard me the sole culprit. That, at least, consoled my heart. I am grateful that he sealed every way possible that could have put me behind the bars. Obviously, he was angry but he was rhetorical rest of the time.”

“Didn’t he scold you?” Binay said bemusedly.

“ Nope, I don’t think the meeting was set to scold me or our basketball team. None of us spoke a word. All the time Principal was busy with the persuasive speech. Tearing apart today’s Kathmandu Post was rather unusual.”- Abhinav bragged as if everything went to easy in the morning meeting.

“Whatever, I do not believe your words. Your heart should have nearly stopped with fear. You are just trying pretend as if nothing happened.” – Binay said sarcastically.

“If you don’t believe, then why do you want to talk about this at first place?” Abhinav retorted annoyingly. “I am simply overdone dealing with things due to that incident.” Abhinav looked frustrated.
“ Why are you so ill-tempered? If you are not going to change this particular demeanor of yours, you will regret your whole life. Life always gives chances to prove ourselves but we should not take it for granted. You will probably never learn decision-making. The day you learn to take right decision at the right time, you’d be the wisest person on the earth. My words do not make any sense to you, do they? Binay vociferated loudly and calmed down at once. “Come on let’s go to library. I want to check this month’s Wave.”

Abhinav could not open up his mouth to continue the argument and followed him to the Library on the first floor of the college building.

×××

Last class of the day, and yet another knock at the door showed up a face of acquaintance. This time office assistant came in the class with two envelops. Lecturer Ashok took the spectacles from his pocket to read the addressee of the letter.

“ Sulav Shrestha, 5th Semester ”- He read the name aloud. He then shifted his eyes to the next envelope and read “Abhinav Bhandari” In a couple of strides through the middle gangway of the class, he reached Abhinav and Sulav, both, sitting on the last row, but in the opposite corners of the class and handed them respective letter with their name.

“Seems like you guys have created a history. This might be a little compliment to your commendable performance in the basketball tournament.” – Lecturer Ashok ridiculed as if he already knew about the letter-thing. He returned to the board and continued teaching.

Abhinav had no idea what that letters was all about He already had a number of acrimonious confrontation with Lecturer Ashok so he could not tear open the envelope in the middle of his class. He had never seen an envelope of that kind except his assessment report card. If only to read the letter content, he wished he had an x-ray probe in his eyes.

×××

Abhinav tore open the envelope as everyone gathered around him in great eagerness. As he unfolded the letter the first thing that took his sight was the subject that read:

‘Subject: About suspension for two weeks from the college activity ‘

He did not have to read rest of lines in the letter. So, he scrunched up the letter at once and put it in his bag.

“Congratulations… Don’t worry… You’ll be fine…. That’s a bit harsh….” He received the mixed reaction as he moved through mass of his colleagues surrounding him.
×××

“ There is no meaning for repenting at this moment. You just can say ‘let it be’ and comfort yourself.” – Binay sympathized with Abhinav’s predicament as they sat on the Table no. 5 on Karki Dai’s.

“ I have nothing to worry about except confronting my parents. You know how they are. At least they could have called my parents first and then handed me the suspension letter. If I tell the truth to my parents then I am dead meat. I don’t know what should I do. They don’t know anything about the basketball incident.’ Abhinav said without a genuine levity.

“Don’t worry I’ll come home with you this evening. You don’t have to speak a word. I think I can handle it pretty good. I have always been your savior. Let me do the favor this time again. But I want you do a thing. Not for me though!” Binay stated cunningly.

“What?”- Abhinav shrugged his shoulder.

“Go and talk to Rashmi. Try to know what she chatted on the principal’s office this afternoon.”

“Are you crazy? I know it’s her who added fuel to the fire. Undoubtedly, she is a whistle-blower. Then why do you want me to talk to her? I don’t wanna talk to her.” Abhinav argued.

“At least you have got a reason to talk to her. Let it be for good or bad. Just be yourself and talk to her.”- Binay

“Nope. I can’t … I mean I don’t want. I have not talked to her till date.”

“ So this is the right time.”- Binay cajoled.

“Ok, then I’ll. You know how I talk people whom I hate. Don’t ever think that I would talk floridly. Off I go. Come home at 6 in the evening.” Abhinav left for the Dhaulagiri Hostel located at Maitidevi.

×××

Abhinav leaned against the hostel boundary wall as he called Urmila on her cellphone.

“Urmila, it’s me Abhi. Could you please tell Rashmi to come down to the entrance. I want to talk to her.”- Abhinav

“Really. Ok ,I will send her.”- Urmila hanged up.

“Rashmi, Rashmi, Rashmi….”- Urmila shouted in excitement. “You know who is here to see you. Come on guess.”
“ I don’t know. No one ever had come to see me. Who is this? Rashmi replied in a calm tone as she closed the “The Lucky One”.

“It’s Abhinav”- Urmila shouted.

“What?” Rashmi responded in a startled vocal. “ You mean he is here and waiting outside”

“Yup, he is. Come on do it fast.”

“No, no I can’t do this.”

“Oh yes, Sweetheart you can.” Urmila pushed Rashmi out of the room.

Abhinav’s was looking at his phone when the gate creaked open. In blue t-shirt with a Tom and Jerry print and plain brown trousers, came Rashmi.

Neither Rashmi nor Abhinav was ready to break the silence.

Finally, Rashmi spoke “Hi”

“Thank you” Abhinav

“ For what? ” Rashmi replied in a low tone.

“For getting me suspended” Abhinav commented slyly.

“ I do not want to talk about this.”-Rashmi

“ Come on let’s go on a short walk and talk about this.” Abhinav insisted.

“No, I can’t leave hostel at this time and I don’t want to either.” Rashmi declined. “ I guess, this meeting is over. See you in the college.” Rashmi shut the gate.

Abhinav could not utter a word to call her back. He had one hell of a stressful day that ended in a turbulence of humiliation.

The Velvet Morning: Chapter Five - A Basketball Clash

“ Try that at home, now give it to me”- Kiran barked at Sulav for taking a long time in winnowing out the best part of the weed. He took a bunch of inflorescence on the hard surface of the notebook and crumpled.

“ Sulav, give me two cigarettes!”- Kiran ordered.

Sulav took two sticks of cigarette from his pocket and handed them to Kiran-“ Here, they are.”

Kiran meticulously emptied a portion of cigarette tobacco on the notebook and shuffled it with the weed. Putting the empty frames of cigarette into the mouth, he sucked in the tobacco-weed mix.

“Who’s got the pills? – Kiran dictated in their marijuana meeting after preparing two joints.

Rabin took out a strip containing five tablets of Nitrazepam and took out four tablets, each for Kiran, Sulav, Manoj and himself.

Kiran and Manoj are the seventh semester students. Sulav and Rabin are the classmates of Abhinav.

“ Come on, let’s do it as fast as possible. Abhi is waiting for us.”- Sulav  stated about Abhinav in the basketball court.

As soon as the sublingual tablet absorbed into the blood they lit up the joints and waited till they were lost in the tranquility of euphoria.

×××

“I wonder why Abhinav is alone in the court. He should be with his team, shouldn’t he?”- Sanita made a remark as she held the ball in her hand and faced her opponent Priyani in the break-time table tennis match.

“ Serve the ball. It’s none of our business. “ – Priyani replied laconically.

“ Girls, you really don’t wanna know this.”- Urmila intervened in the conversation as she waited her turn for the play. “ Sulav and Rabin from our class are often seen with Kiran and his friends. I heard that Kiran is a drug addict. And may be they are in the storehouse taking drugs or smoking ganja.”

Meanwhile Kiran and his team came out of storehouse that was adjoined to the college boundary on the north.

“Look, they are coming.” Priyani revealed her interest on druggies of her college.

“ If they are high on ganja, you will probably notice their red eyes.”- Urmila continued to explicate on the topic.

“How to you know about all these stuff? – Priyani asked inquisitively.

“Manav told me about this. He knows Kiran.” Urmila replied.

Rashmi was sitting on the base plinth of a Pine tree and reading “The Lucky One” by Nicholas Sparks.  She apparently seemed to be captivated by the book and miss the gossip.

“Rashmi, come on lets play.” Urmila pulled Rashmi by her hand and handed the bat. Rashmi bookmarked the page she was undone with and joined Urmila. Priyani and Sanita went towards basketball court to play with Abhinav.

“Hey, Abhi pass the ball. Let’s play rounder. “- Sanita yelled at Abhinav.

“Guys are already here. We are practicing for the match this Saturday. So may be we can play rounder the next time.” Abhinav passed the ball towards Sanita. Sanita made a weak shot that went lower to the board. She giggled at herself and left the court.

×××

“Abhi” Sulav waved signaling to pass the ball.

“Where were you guys? “ Abhinav showed his anger at Sulav.

“ We were having a good time. Let’s play.” Sulav passed the ball to Kiran. Kiran made a three-pointer attempt but the ball hit the ring and bounced towards girls playing table tennis. The ball stopped at a point near Rashmi. Meanwhile, Abhinav came fetching the ball.

“Rashmi, ball” Abhinav hesitantly requested to throw the ball.

Rashmi grabbed the ball and tossed towards Abhinav. She smiled briskly and Abhinav smiled back as he got the ball.

Afternoon class bell rang.

“You guys are always late for the game. We have not been practicing well. We can’t win games this way.” – Abhinav commented forlornly.

“Our team is the best team and the most feared team in the tournament. So stop fussing around about winning and losing. Take it easy. Let’s go to class. We will play this evening at Pulchowk Youth Club.” Kiran replied.

All of them left the court to go to their respective classes.

Match Day

“ Two quarters are already down and here is the score at half time. Kasthamandup College is leading with the score of 37 and Jawalakhel College is trailing 6 points with the score of 31. Let me remind you, this is the 4th match of the Intercollege Basketball Tournament. The knock out stages will continue till Monday and pre-quarters will be played from Tuesday. Well, each team has 10 minutes time to devise their strategy to win this game. Spectators, come on cheer up loud for your team.” – the announcer emphatically detailed about the match.

The music was playing loud on the background and there was a deafening noise in the hall. Kasthamandup College team was gathered at a corner of the basketball court. Chetan, the captain, stood in the middle of the circle to instruct the team.

“Guys everything is going good. Our margin of lead is not that huge so we need to be sharp on the break. The no. 6 player seems to be a real threat. He got too many scores cheaply. Kiran, you got good height to check him all the time. Sulav, do not try the shot when you are surrounded. First intersect into the box and pass outside. That would create a lot of space and time for player outside the box to attempt a successful score. Now take this glucose water and gain some energy to show these guys what we are really capable of.”

Kiran poked Sulav to go to the restroom. They both left the team behind to go to restroom. Abhinav sat with the towel around his head and seemed like he has envisaging the result of the match in their favor. He stood up to call Binay from the stand. Quickly scanning through the crowd, he saw Binay sitting next to Rashmi. He could not believe his eyes.

Rashmi was sitting in between Urmila and Binay. She looked cool in jeans and t-sirt. Hair untied and hanging around the shoulder truly magnified her beauty. This was the first time Abhinav had seen her outdoors. Her image in his mind would soon be configured from a naïve looking college girl to a supermodel. For few seconds his eyes denied to look elsewhere. In fact, he totally forgot his intention to call Binay. He recollected his memory as he removed his sight from the stand.

“ Binay “ he shouted and signaled him to come.

Binay came running. “ Look at the stand, there is your chief guest. Play extraordinary to get your reward from the chief guest.” He smiled gesticulating the presence of Rashmi.

“ Go get me a can of Red Bull “ – Abhinav ordered.

The game resumed. The score leveled to 58-58 at the end of the third quarter. Into the fourth quarter, Manoj passed the ball to Abhinav from the baseline. Abhinav threw a long pass to Kiran but he failed to grab the overhead ball that was within his limit. Abhinav shouted “ Come on. Don’t lose the ball.”
Their opponent seemed quicker on the ball. Kasthamandup college defending went bit loose. Kiran failed to return on the rebound, as he seemed pretty exhausted. Sulav, too was sloppy on dribbling and passing. Trailing 76-72 and clock ticking down Abhinav was frantically shouting at teammates to pass the ball to him.  At the final whistle the score read 80-78 and Kasthamandup College lost the match and was knocked out of tournament.

Chetan again stood up to analyze their game as the whole team sat in a corner. “We should not have lost this match. We committed too many mistakes in the fourth quarter. Especially our defending was poor.”

“ Why don’t you point at Kiran? He is man of the match.” – Abhinav interfered Chetan to show his sarcasm about Kiran’s game.

Kiran stood from his position and pushed Abhinav by his face. “ What do you mean to say?”  Abhinav nearly stroke his head on the floor from the push given by Kiran. Abhinav was infuriated. He stood up, gritted his teeth and punched Kiran right on the face. Such a massive blow was enough to produce a concussion. Kiran laid unconscious on the ground, while Abhinav moaned with pain as his right hand swelled up. People on the crowd were shouting with fear.

Binay came running and grabbed Abhinav’s hand. “  Not a wise decision.  Get the ice pack.” He then turned towards Kiran. “Somebody call an ambulance. We need to take him to hospital as soon as possible.”

Pandemonium broke out but Abhinav was the only person to perceive the silence in such an agony. He lost the match and then his temper. All he could do was wait for consequences.
